What is success?

It’s not really a question I’ve asked myself before, it’s not something I have ever wondered if I’ve had before. Success to me was something that happened to other people who had the big jobs, they had ambition and were in control of their lives, and for so long I’ve been controlled by a corporation and made to feel like I gave up my right to success in exchange for having an awesome time drinking cocktails with people I just met next to a pool in some exotic country. And it was fun! And fine for a while. But for a few years I had been feeling discontent. I lacked success and purpose and felt a little lost. I still didn’t feel like I had the ability to go it alone and make a path of my own.

So that was my first success of 2016. Realising this.

One of my successes that I’m most proud of was that I was brave and took my life into my own hands. I left a stable(ish) job, one that is a dream job for many, and decided to follow my own dreams. I recognised my life goals had changed and although it was comfortable to continue it would leave me with just half a life.

And that is a success!

For many, success feels so unattainable that we fall into a trap where we don’t feel like we can be successful, so we don’t take the steps to reach it. But success doesn’t have to be huge. It doesn’t have to be earning millions, reaching the top of your game or the end goal. It’s the little steps you take each day to make sure you are making the most out of your short time on this planet. It’s finding the positives in your life, acknowledging your own achievements no matter how big or small! It’s taking back control of who you are and being honest with what you want and how you’re going to get there.

This is all new to me, I am so unused to feeling successful and have spent a lifetime mocking my achievements, belittling what I’m proud of to appear modest, “protecting” myself by being negative about myself so people don’t think I’m egotistical. And I haven’t done anyone any favours in the process. I listened to a fabulous webinar from The Voiceover Network with Anna Parker-Naples, an NLP practitioner, about success and how to achieve it and it was like a lightening bolt hit me. Success is there for the taking, it takes hard work and focus, but is waiting for you to grab it by the balls! She encouraged us to write down your successes, acknowledge everything you’ve achieved in a Success Journal, and that’s what I’ve been doing. It feels wonderful! I’m proud, and excited for the future, and confident that I know what I want from my life and have the power to work hard and achieve my future successes! I feel very lucky that I’m surrounded by people in this industry who motivate you and want you to be successful.

So at the close of 2016, I urge you to think about what you really want from your life. You are here for such an incredibly small amount of time but you can make that time beautiful. It won’t wait for you, it wont hand it to you on a plate, and if you let your dreams slip on by it will come back to haunt you in your last moments. Take control, embrace your successes, embrace the learning from your failures, and have a very happy new year!
